REGION — A group of homeschooling moms from Bellaire and surrounding areas have gotten together to organize weekly field trips to various local businesses. The group, which formed last year, only had around 10 kids to begin. Now, at the start of the 2021-2022 school year, their community has grown to 13 moms and 24 children of varying ages.

This school year, the group plans to go on a field trip at least once a week on Monday or Tuesday, said Jennie McCormick-Killian, who is one of the moms in the group and in charge of planning and scheduling all of their trips.

For their first field trip of the season on Sept. 13, the group went to Dairyland Farm in Ellsworth and this week they went apple picking at Friske’s Orchards. For the rest of September and throughout October, McCormick-Killian has scheduled a trip to Grass River Natural Area in Bellaire, a tour of the Silver Leaf Sawmill in Elmira, a color hike at Landslide Scenic Overlook in Mancelona, a visit to Fleming Farms in Gaylord, and ice skating and swimming at the Gaylord Sportsplex.
