On hold: County 911 awaits approval for upgrade

BELLAIRE – New technology – already approved by voters through the 911 millage, but awaiting contract approval from the county’s legal counsel prior to installation – will help prevent incidents like last week’s temporary 911 phone line outage, according to Antrim County's 911 Operations Manager.

"What happened last week was really a unique event, but it was also a good example of why we need that new technology on our system," said Antrim County Sgt. Mike Gant, head of the county's 911 Dispatch Center since the retirement of Steve Bratschi in 2015.

According to Gant, contractors excavating a small area last Wednesday afternoon behind the Sheriff's Office as part of a minor construction project accidentally hit a buried phone line that was very close to the surface of the ground.
