Heroic trio: Local firefighters help save woman from house fire
KALKASKA – Not that they’ll brag, but Kalkaska Township Fire Department Station No. 7 is quietly celebrating the heroic efforts of a trio of local firefighters who helped save a woman from her burning home, as well as the fact they returned home safely to their families.
While already gathered at the department’s station house on Laurel Street for a regular Monday night training meeting, Station No. 7 firefighters responded to a structure fire on Anderson Road in Orange Township shortly before 7:30 p.m.
After arriving at the scene, firefighters learned that one woman was still in the residence, along with two dogs, including her service dog.
Just moments later, a trio of firefighters – Lt. Matt Allen, Lt. Kyle Jenkins and firefighter Mark Holston Jr. – entered the home on a search and rescue mission.
For the most part, the rescue effort went well. The firefighters located the lone female and safely removed her from the structure through a window, with several firefighters waiting outside to complete the mission. The trio of firefighters then located and saved both dogs from the blaze.
However, one of the firefighters was injured when hit by falling debris.
