Royce Ragland, GreenER chairperson, shares her passion for natural resources conservation with committee members Jen Roeser and Paul Moyer.

ELK RAPIDS – Growing up on a small farm in southern Illinois, Royce Ragland was well aware of her family’s dependence on natural resources.

“I always understood how our livelihood was linked to conservation and stewardship of the land and water,” she said. “It has all stuck with me. I like to be involved with groups and people who feel that way.”

That’s why Ragland is the driving force behind Green Elk Rapids (GreenER), a loose-knit group of like-minded individuals committed to raising awareness of environmental issues and support for natural resources preservation. She and a couple dozen members of the informal committee are heading into the 10th year of organizing and hosting a diverse slate of educational programs and hands-on events to bring attention to local and global concerns.

“We believe in that old adage to think global and act local,” Ragland said. “Everything starts at the local level … the commitment, the passion, the understanding, the lack of understanding. We’re trying to be as broad as we can and yet as collaborative and inclusive as possible.”
