TRAVERSE CITY – Robert Vincent Gerring, of Mancelona, could spend the rest of his life in jail after accepting a plea agreement Monday before 13th Circuit Court Judge Thomas Power in Traverse City.

As part of the agreement, Gerring pled guilty to a charge of second-degree murder, and attempted murder. Originally Gerring faced a total of nine charges including: open murder, attempted murder, home invasion, two charges of home invasion – second degree, breaking and entering, felon in possession of a firearm and two felony firearms charges. The balance of those was dismissed as part of Monday’s deal.

Both of the accepted charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. Additionally, for violating his parole on an earlier charge, Gerring faces up to another eight years, depending on the sentence he receives on the two primary charges.

Gerring, 30, was accused of shooting 64-year-old Daniel Sutherland, which resulted in Sutherland's death two days later, as well as shooting a 15-year-old juvenile neighbor of Sutherland. The incident occurred Saturday, March 10 at Sutherland's home on M-66 near Green River Road.
