Gaylord man charged in accidental death of hunter
REGION – The man believed to be responsible for shooting another hunter last November near Torch Lake has been charged.
Antrim County Prosecutor James Rossiter has charged David Michael Barber, 45, of Gaylord (formerly of Alden), with homicide/involuntary manslaughter, a felony firearm possession charge, and a charge of careless discharge of a weapon.
If convicted, Barber could face up to 15 years in prison.
An investigation conducted by the Department of Natural Resources, which handled the incident, found Barber accidentally shot Justin Edward Beutel, 38, of Sanford, off West Elder Road just east of East Torch Lake Drive north of Alden, on Nov. 15 while deer hunting on property belonging to the Beutel family.
Arraignment was set for after press time at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9 in Antrim County's 86th District Court in Bellaire.
