From fan to friend: Local resident's autograph collection on display at library
BELLAIRE – Growing up in quiet northern Michigan, lifelong Bellaire resident Bryan Hardy has always been fascinated with celebrities he saw on TV and heard on vinyl records.
Hardy never thought he'd be lucky enough to meet any of those stars, much less eventually own an impressive collection of autographs on display at the Bellaire Library this month, but that all changed when he went to work at Shanty Creek Resorts in his teens.
"A lot of celebrities staying at the resort before they performed for private conferences or up at Castle Farms in Charlevoix would come into the Lakeview dining room, where I started out bussing tables," he said.
"One of my first autographs was from the comedian Phyllis Diller, who I was actually lucky enough to meet by taking her empty plates and pouring more water for her, which is hysterical, but you get to know a lot of people when you're helping them eat!"
