Fall sports begin for area teams
REGION — Football, cross country and soccer. Boys tennis and girls golf too.
Each of those sports got the 2019 fall sports season under way on Monday as teams across the region, as well as throughout the state, began practicing for the upcoming season.
While some teams are seeking to continue positive momentum from the previous season, others are trying to erase struggles of a year ago. The Kalkaska football team certainly was anxious to have a clean slate after a winless season last year, with first-year varsity head coach Justin Thelan bringing new enthusiasm to the program. Thelan was vocal on the field outside Kalkaska High School in his team’s first session in the morning, particularly in urging his players to sprint, not walk, as they took part in drills.
