FIFE LAKE – After batting an even .500 in the May 2 election, officials at Forest Area Community Schools may decide to go back to the proverbial plate to see if they can’t find enough support to help pass a bond proposal to fund proposed facility upgrades and renovations.

Voters in Boardman, Garfield, Orange and Springfield townships helped to narrowly defeat the bond proposal that would have allowed the school district to borrow up to $4.5 million, as well as issue general obligation bonds, to fund a variety of projects, including upgrading entrances, additions at the middle/high school, update athletic facilities and purchase new school buses.

The margin of defeat was very close, with just two more voters (262) casting ballots against the bond request than those who voted for it (264), when calculating voters in just Kalkaska County.

Voters in Boardman Township might have pushed the proposal into the loss column, with 136 casting “no” ballots, compared to 112 “yes” votes.

At the same time, voters approved the district’s request to establish a “sinking fund” with a five-year, one-mill levy for the construction repair of school buildings, school security improvements, the acquisition or upgrading of technology and “all other purposes authorized by law.”
