Extension could force Kaliseum to close

KALKASKA — Officials in Kalkaska County might soon be able to truly empathize with area business owners over the financial struggles caused by measures to fight the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday, Dec. 7, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services again extended various restrictions, including the closure of indoor dining and limitations on in-person classes, as state officials sought to stem the tide of a spike in virus patients.

The news infuriated restaurant owners statewide, who have already faced financial hardship during the pandemic. According to news reports, the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association has stated that at least 40 percent of the state’s restaurants might be forced to close at least temporarily and that 250,000 related workers could face layoffs.

But, the 12-day extension also came as bad news for the Kaliseum Recreation Complex.
