Ellsworth takes over first place in Northern Lakes
ELLSWORTH — While it looked like Ellsworth was going to breeze past Alanson early on in Friday’s boys basketball clash between Northern Lakes Conference undefeated teams, it ended up being anything but for the Lancers, who had to hang on for a 70-60 win.
The final margin was not a good indicator for how tense things got for Ellsworth down the stretch as what had been a 24-point Lancers’ lead near the middle of the second quarter was slashed to just one point with 1:48 to play after a quick 7-0 burst by the Vikings made it a 59-58 game. Ellsworth responded by finishing the game on an 11-2 spurt to take over sole possession of first in the league.
“Not having Ethan (Tornga) in the third quarter was a difference,” said Ellsworth coach Jarod Steenwyk. “Our guys got a little tired. When we played our style, pushing the ball on them with some thought process behind it — not just going chaotic — I thought that’s when we were at our best. Pushing ball with some sense.”
