ELLSWORTH – Mark your calendars and plan on a weekend designed to celebrate "The Year of the Pig," as 2019 has been designated on Chinese calendars, and the Village of Ellsworth does every year with its annual Pig Roast, scheduled for Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15.

The annual event kicks off on Friday evening at 5 p.m. with a picnic dinner celebrating "All-American Summertime Cuisine," sponsored by the Eastport Baptist Church, at the Ellsworth Community Park, which has proven very popular for the last several years, according to Pig Roast organizers.

Sponsored by the Banks Township Fire Department and Ellsworth Softball Team, the event children always look forward to – the family water slide and ice cream social – will begin at 6 p.m., also at the Community Park,

Paddlers will want to help Paddle Antrim celebrate its fifth anniversary by watching a short presentation at 5:30 p.m., then join other enthusiasts for a short paddle from Ellsworth's River Park. All ages and experienced paddlers and paddle crafts are welcome to join at no charge.

Friday evening will also feature a special evening of musical entertainment with the Horton Creek Bluegrass Band from 7-9 p.m. at the Banks Township Hall. Tickets for the event are $12 at the door, or $10 purchased in advance at the Front Porch Cafe.

The celebration will continue at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with a 5K Fun Run and Walk, sponsored by the Ellsworth Track and Cross Country Team. All participants need to register online or day of race from 7:30-8:45 a.m., which begins at Ellsworth Elementary. A Kids 1 Mile Run will start at 8:45 a.m., while the adult run begins at 9 a.m.

Other morning events include the traditional pancake breakfast at the Banks Township Hall, and the Steelhorse Motorcycle Ride, which benefits the Ellsworth Moms and Tots Center and His House.

One of the most popular events of the entire weekend, the traditional Pig Roast Parade, begins promptly at 11 a.m., followed immediately by the traditional roast pork luncheon at the Community Park Pavilion. Roast pork on a bun, potato salad, baked beans, applesauce, beverage and dessert will be available for $10/adults, or $8 for seniors and children. Ice cream and hot dogs will also be available.
