Elks kick off season with annual Black and Orange Scrimmage
ELK RAPIDS — The Elk Rapids football team opened the gridiron season for the fans at the annual Black and Orange Scrimmage last Friday evening at Glowicki Field.
Friday was the first day of practice in full pads, allowing the varsity players to take the field in their new uniforms. The JV team also participated in the scrimmage. The varsity squad has 20 players on the roster, while the JV features 16 players.
“We held the scrimmage on Saturday morning last year, but it didn’t feel right. We went back to having the scrimmage under the lights, like football is played,” said Elk Rapids varsity football head coach Keith Schulte. “We (were) running plays as the guys learn the system, doing some skill drills and blocking and tackling drills. It (was) an introduction of the team to the fans.”
