Elks and Blazers split for first conference wins
KALKASKA — Elk Rapids and Kalkaska each earned their first Lake Michigan Conference wins after splitting a doubleheader on Monday in Kalkaska.
The Blazers got their first win of the season taking the opener 12-3, and the Elks took the nightcap 5-1, snapping a seven-game losing streak.
In game one, Kalkaska’s Lawson Ziegler was the winning pitcher with a complete game, fanning 12. The Blazers scored five runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third and a final run in the fifth. Logan Kniss went 3 for 4, Tim Yanz was 2 for 3 with two doubles, and Dean Albright batted 2 for 3.
Kyle VanCompernolle started for the Elks, pitching 1.3 inning before giving way to Lane Scheiern. VanCompernolle had three singles, one RBI and scored twice. Justin Jansen had two hits and an RBI.
In game two, Gavin Centala went the distance for the Elks, allowing two hits and striking out 11.
