Easter comes early: VFW post, township park to host egg hunts April 13-14

KALKASKA – Easter, or at least the spirit of the holiday, will come to Kalkaska County a week early, when at least two holiday egg hunts are slated for the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14.

Land-O-Lakes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8684 and its Ladies Auxiliary will host their annual Easter Egg Hunt at the post on Hyde Street in Kalkaska on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. The event is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.

“We had a great turnout last year,” said Shannon Allen, auxiliary member and one of the event’s coordinators. “We are anticipating another great turn out.

“Last year we had over 300, so we anticipate at least that or more.”

According to Allen, there are no real changes from previous egg hunts, with children being split into three age groups, including ages 4 and under, ages 5-8, and 9 and up for the egg hunt.

And, besides plenty of candy, those attending may indulge on hotdogs and chips. There will also be prize giveaways, including several bicycles being awarded to lucky winners.

“The important aspect of the giveaway is that the bikes are donated by local businesses, members of the auxiliary and citizens of our local community,” Allen said. “The community is a primary supporter for the egg hunt.”

The fun won’t end Saturday. More candy-filled eggs, prizes, games and snacks will be on tap at the Springfield Township Park and Recreation Area’s Community Egg Hunt set for noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.

Unlike previous years, Danielle Hamilton, who is helping coordinate the township event for the first time, said the egg hunt at the recreation area located near the intersection of Creighton and Lund roads, will have a slightly different format.
