County fair to continue despite lack of agreement with BOC
KALKASKA – With the 2017 Kalkaska County Agricultural Fair less than two weeks away, it’s unlikely that the fair board and Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners will reach agreement on a new lease for the county fairgrounds and the Kalkaska Civic Center.
That doesn’t mean there won’t be a fair, which is slated for Tuesday, July 25, through Saturday, July 29.
“Yes, we are having a fair,” said D. Allen White, fair board president. “We’ve worked very hard to bring the fair back. And, it’s growing more and more every year.
“This is a community event,” he added. “This is for the community.”
The fair board and board of commissioners have been at loggerheads over a new lease since January, when commissioners unanimously voted to void a previously approved 99-year contract. And, more recently, commissioners asked the fair to pay nearly $9,000 in rental fees, either through a cash payment or by in-kind services, for use of the county fairgrounds for a two-week period, including the dates for the fair.
