County board selects ‘qualified provider’ for potential Kaliseum upgrades

KALKASKA – The progress has been slow, but the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners might soon take another step toward up to $4.2 million in improvements and upgrades to the Kaliseum Recreation Complex.

County officials have previously discussed that the Kaliseum, which is nearing its 20th anniversary, is in dire need of replacement, improvements and upgrades to the building’s mechanical equipment, such as heating and cooling functions. And, they’re trying to find a way to make sure that local taxpayers won’t have to pick up the bill.

At the board’s regular meeting in July, commissioners unanimously approved a motion naming Ameresco as the county’s “qualified provider” for capital outlay and energy savings performance contract for the Kaliseum project. The motion also established the board’s Department of Public Works Committee to be the oversight body for the effort.
