KALKASKA — There were no last-minute surprises, as the Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners approved a nearly $7.8-million budget for 2021 at its last regular meeting of 2020 on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

The budget plan, which will be sent to the Michigan Department of Treasury, includes a projected $7,753,669 in expenditures for 2021, an increase of more than $300,000 over the 2020 budget.

It was also not a surprise that the proposed budget included a revenue shortfall of about $295,000.

District No. 3 Commissioner Kohn Fisher, chairman of the county board, said that, despite approving a budget for next year, there’s obviously more work to be done.

“We have our approved budget,” Fisher said afterwards. “(But) there will be budget adjustments as necessary. This is no different than in previous years.”
