KALKASKA – The upcoming November general election is sure to continue a rather real-life game of musical chairs for the Kalkaska Village Council.

The seven-member council is certain to welcome at least one new member, as a result of the election, with current trustee Penny Dupuie not listed among the candidates competing for five seats.

Although, after winning a recall election over then incumbent Village President Jeff Sieting in May, the current president, Harley Wales, seems certain to retain his seat and win his first full two-year term as the leader of the council. That’s because no one filed to oppose Wales by the July 24 deadline, according to Village Clerk Angie Koon.

Seven other candidates, including incumbents Tim Ellis, Erik Hayes and Robert Larsen, will be competing for a trio of trustee seats that come with full four-year terms in office. They’re being challenged by potential newcomers Annette Goodyear, Shana North, Michelle Miller and Cameron Porteus.

That creates somewhat of an issue, as no candidate filed to run for two years left remaining of former Denise Kelly’s term, which expires in December 2020. Hayes has been filling Kelly’s seat on the board since April, when he was appointed to the council following Kelly’s resignation.
