ELK RAPIDS – It’s official. The Elk Rapids District Library can now move forward with its plan to expand the village-owned facility by 6,320 square-feet.

After more than two years of presentations, discussion, public input and deliberation, the proposal was approved 6-1 Monday during the village council’s regular meeting.

One week earlier Council held a lengthy public hearing on the issue, which included presentations by architects from Hopkins Burns and Daniels & Zermack outlining the proposed expansion to the district library along with highlights of a requested smaller addition. Additionally Council allowed presentations from the Preserve Our Island House and Property Association, followed by the Better Library Better World group. Those were followed by individual comments from residents and interested parties.

At Monday’s meeting – which included a handful of other village business items – the library issue was placed under new business, which allowed further public comment before council members deliberated on the proposal.
