REGION – Officials from Consumers Energy made a stop last Friday in Bellaire to present a $5,000 rebate check to Shanty Creek Resort.

The rebate check was the first of its kind awarded in Michigan under Consumers “PowerMIDrive” program, which began in June. The Resort became part of the program last summer when it purchased and installed an electric vehicle (EV) charging station.

“We were excited to present Shanty Creek with $5,000 for their EV charging station last Friday,” said Consumers Energy media spokesman Brian Wheeler.

“To make it easier for EV owners to find charging stations around Michigan, we launched our PowerMIDrive program in June. That program gives rebates to companies willing to invest in EV charging stations across our state.

“Supporting the adoption of EVs in this way is important to us because it fits in with our commitment to people, the planet and Michigan’s prosperity,” added Wheeler.

Outlining that philosophy, he offered the following description:

  • People – “There’s a demand for these vehicles. Over 1 million EVs are on the road in the U.S. today – and that number should climb to over 18 million by 2030.”
  • Planet – “EVs do not use fossil fuels, and they can be charged at times when there’s not a huge demand for power.”
  • Prosperity – “Michigan’s automakers are committing to EVs and will look to these vehicles to power their businesses for generations to come.”

Officials at Shanty Creek welcomed the rebate and fully endorse the program, which mirrors their commitment to customer service.

"This is something we would have done whether we got the check or not,” said Lindsey Southwell, director of marketing for the Resort. “It's about servicing our guests and making a good impact for our guests. They travel a long distance to get up north and they need a place to charge."

According to Wheeler, Consumers “PowerMIDrive” rebate program is not limited to large corporations or businesses. He said it also benefits the public and municipalities through:

  • Rebates of $400 to $500 for installing chargers in homes around the state
  • Rebates up to $5,000 for chargers installed in public areas
  • Up to $70,000 in rebates for 24 DC fast chargers along highways and travel routes in Michigan

The program also offers lower charging prices during non-peak hours.
