KALKASKA – A group of volunteers are trying to get rolling on a possible new skate park that could be located in the Village of Kalkaska.
Individuals gathered at Chalker Park during the annual cleanup on June 9, with the topic seemingly gaining momentum at the June 11 regular meeting of the Kalkaska Village Council.
Lauren Clark, a member of the newly formed Kalkaska Skate Park Community Committee, said the group has not only worked to establish the committee, but also create a Facebook page.
“We’re collecting signatures to see if there’s public support,” Clark said. “It was open to everyone.”
The group is also looking for a possible location for a skate park, including reviewing sites near the intersection of Fourth and Walnut streets and Chalker Park on Laurel Street.
“We basically unanimously agreed that the best location would be at Chalker Park,” Clark said, adding the group was looking at a potential “all inclusive” update to the park.
Chalker Park is already the home to a small concrete pad that was supposed to be developed as a skate park, with the village previously purchasing a small amount of skate rails and other equipment. Though, organizers of the effort admit the pad falls short of what’s needed by skateboard enthusiasts.
