Commissioners table Abstract department merger with Register of Deeds
BELLAIRE — During an evening meeting held on Thursday, Nov. 19, Antrim County's Board of Commissioners tabled approval of a resolution that would finalize a merger of the county's Abstract department with the Register of Deeds office, and heard comments from one of the Commissioners regarding the COVID-19 restrictions instituted statewide last week.
Discussion of the proposed resolution was lengthy, with concerns voiced surrounding Abstract employees losing their jobs, when the merger would take place, and how it would be done. A motion to merge the two offices was approved by a vote of 5-3 at the board's last meeting on Nov. 5.
Ultimately, after more than hour, after comments and input from Register of Deeds Patty Niepoth and County Treasurer Sherry Comben, the proposal for resolution was tabled pending further information and a better understanding of how the merger will work.
