CENTRAL LAKE – They say it takes a village to raise a child.

In this situation, it takes a village to support an entire community.

On Saturday, May 11, the Central Lake Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual dinner and silent auction, the primary fundraiser for the Fourth of July fireworks show.

Along with the annual parade, Lions' Club barbecue and other holiday festivities, the annual fireworks show ensures that, for at least a day or so, the village's population will triple, “allowing hundreds, if not thousands, of people, to learn what a great area we live in,” according to the chamber.

"The Fourth of July is traditionally Central Lake's biggest day of the year, and the kick-off to the summer tourist season," said longtime chamber dinner organizer Debbie Chappuies of Central Lake Pharmacy, who has coordinated the event for the past 22 years. "And the Chamber's annual dinner and silent auction is the biggest fundraiser for the year for the Central Lake fireworks."

This year, the chamber is hoping that the dinner will raise at least $12,000, the anticipated cost of this year's pyrotechnic display.

"We've come a long way since we first started out with the dinner and auction in 1997, when 30 people attended and we raised $800," recalled Chappuies. "But it's a huge effort to raise as much money as we need these days for the fireworks, and we need everyone's support."

This year's event, as in past years, will be held at the Blue Pelican Inn on North Main Street in Central Lake. But Chappuies noted the importance of when the dinner, which is open to the public, is being held.

"We had been doing it in the fall for a few years, but we've switched back to the spring, so all of our snowbirds and seasonal residents can attend as well."
