Citizens' group formed to demand a public vote on county jail decision

BELLAIRE — Concerned that decisions may be made by the Antrim County Board of Commissioners regarding the question of a new jail without the approval of the residents of the county, a citizens' group has formed to press the need for a public vote on the matter.

Called the "Citizens Who Want A Vote On The Antrim County Jail", the group stems from a Facebook page created by local Mancelona area realtor Donna Gundle-Krieg on Feb. 21.

By Tuesday, Feb. 25, more than 250 residents and other interested citizens had joined the group.

Stating that her personal concerns about decisions the county may make were shared by many of her friends and neighbors, before creating the group Gundle-Krieg spoke to the Board of Commissioners on the matter at their Feb. 20 meeting, saying, "I strongly believe that Antrim County residents deserve a vote if we are going to pay for an expensive, new jail. Nine people, some with special interests, should not be making that decision when taxpayers are paying so much."
