Charges dropped against former CL treasurer

BELLAIRE – Criminal charges of maintaining a drug house levied in January against a former Central Lake Township treasurer were dropped last week following action by the Antrim County Prosecutor.

Heather Springstead, 39, of Central Lake, had been arraigned Jan. 19 in Antrim County's 86th District Court on felony charges of Controlled Substance – maintaining a drug house, following a Jan. 10 Traverse Narcotics Team raid on her Central Lake home. That raid resulted in the arrest of three others, all of whom were also charged with illegal drug offenses.

The charge was dropped and the case against Springstead dismissed after Antrim County Prosecutor Jim Rossiter filed a nolle prosequi, meaning Antrim County was no longer interested in pursuing prosecution of Springstead, which was approved Feb. 28 by 86th District Court Judge Michael Stepka prior to a preliminary exam scheduled for Springstead.

The preliminary exam was cancelled, as was a $50,000 personal recognizance bond.

Asked for comment regarding the dropped charges, Rossiter said only that the case had been dismissed pending further investigation.
