KALKASKA – Scheduling issues for today’s families, with parents working – possibly even in a different town – and kids involved in multiple school activities can become a difficult obstacle to overcome.

However, in trying to better serve both students and their families, Kalkaska Public Schools has introduced a more flexible after school bussing program with assistance from Kalkaska Area Transportation (KAT).

Chuck Sorentino, principal at Kalkaska High School, said district officials met with KAT representatives to try to solve the issue of getting students who might have to stay late after school or dismissed for activities – such as practice for one of the school’s athletic teams – without parents having to make special arrangements to get them home safely.

“Basically, we said here’s the vision,” Sorentino said at a recent KPS Board of Education meeting. “How can we make this work?”

According to Sorentino, the school and KAT have combined efforts to develop a special, on-demand bussing program for such students.

“It’s door to door,” Sorentino said. “The kids sign up for the program.

“Then, we fax a list over (to KAT) and they create a route,” he added. “The route is all set. They  (students) get dropped off.”

While the program is still in its infancy, KPS officials are encouraged by its early success in getting active students home safe and sound, while also helping parents with busy schedules of their own.
