Blazing a Trail: Starr savors opportunity to lead KPS
KALKASKA – Terry Starr made a major adjustment to his closet earlier this year. The Milton Township resident traded in his vast collection of orange and black apparel in favor of a wardrobe now reflecting a nice shade of royal blue.
Starr, who spent the last 18 years as an elementary (and later) middle school principal in Elk Rapids, was initially hired as superintendent for Kalkaska Public Schools at the end of April. After a brief contact negotiation session and full background check, Starr officially began his duties July 1. He replaced outgoing superintendent Karen Sherwood who announced her resignation in December, two and a half years after she succeeded former interim superintendent Lee Sandy in mid-2015.
Starr began his career in education as an upper-elementary teacher at AuGres-Sims (1984-87) and later in Midland (1987-1994), eventually becoming an elementary principal with Midland Public Schools (1994-2000) before coming to Elk Rapids’ Lakeland Elementary and Cherryland Middle School (2000-2018).
No stranger to a district’s top post, Starr often filled in when Elk Rapids’ superintendent was ill, on vacation or medical leave.
For Starr, the KPS post is a two-fold blessing: the realization of a professional dream coming true and – more importantly to him – the opportunity to share his experience and knowledge by lifting others up and helping them reach their goals.
