KALKASKA – Suddenly, a winless Kalkaska High School varsity football team has found itself without a permanent leader.

According to a report by MISportsNow.com, Blazers head coach Josh Bigby announced his resignation, a move confirmed by Kalkaska Public Schools officials Tuesday evening, Oct. 2, with three games still remaining on its 2018 schedule.

Kyle Smith, the team’s wide receivers coach and head coach of the JV football squad, will reportedly take over the varsity team on an interim basis.

Bigby was in his first year as the Blazers head coach, succeeding former coach Jeremy Wilkinson, who had stepped down after the conclusion of the 2017 season to spend more time with his family.

But, after going 40-44 in nine years under Wilkinson, including multiple trips to the state playoffs, Kalkaska seemed to struggle under Bigby. The Blazers are currently 0-6, including their most recent defeat, a 47-6 loss to Northern Michigan Football Conference rival Grayling on Sept. 28.
