Betty Jane Johnson

Betty Jane Johnson, 94 of Gaylord died peacefully, Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018 at Aspen Ridge.
She was born Jan. 12, 1924 in Detroit, the daughter of George L. and Helen M. (Peffers) Coatta.
Betty moved from Central Lake to Gaylord in 1961 and she worked many years as a care giver with the State of Michigan and in several different locations around Gaylord.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Betty was passionate about sports and for the last 25 years she was a fierce supporter of watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play at both Gaylord Public and St. Mary’s Schools.  She rarely missed a game, and when they weren’t playing she went with her sons and watched them referee or watched her grandsons coach.  Betty could always be found with a smile on her face and cheering loud.  Betty loved the Detroit Tigers, too.
On Jan. 5, 1946 in Dearborn she married Edward J. Johnson, who preceded her in death in 2004.
She was also preceded in death by son and daughter in-law, Edwin “Jim” (Roxann) Johnson; grandson, Benjamin Johnson; great-grandson, Thomas Golba; brother, John Coatta; and sister, Helen Davis.
Betty is survived by her children Margaret “Pegi” (John) Jenkins of Gaylord, Judith (George) Johnston of Lapeer, George “Tom” (Jenni) Johnson of Gaylord, Stephen (Judi) Johnson of Gaylord and David (Jane) Johnson also of Gaylord.
Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and brother, David Coatta of North Carolina.
A memorial service was held Monday, Aug. 6 at the First United Methodist Church of Gaylord. Pastor Dan Bowman and Rev John Naile officiated. Interment took place at Lakeview Cemetery in Torch Lake Township.
Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Michigan, 989 Spaulding SE, Ada, Michigan, 49301. Please include her name on the check.
Arrangements have been handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.  Please sign Betty’s online guestbook at mortensenfuneralhomes.com.
