Bellaire gets challenge from Central Lake in district opener
BOYNE FALLS — The old adage that anything can happen in the high school boys and girls basketball postseason tournaments was on full display in Monday’s Division 4 girls basketball district opener between Bellaire and Central Lake.
Despite beating the Trojans twice by an average of 22 points this year, Bellaire got a tough challenge from Central Lake the third time, as it took the Eagles until the last half of the fourth quarter to pull away in a 48-36 win.
Bellaire took the lead for good late in the first half, but was never able to get comfortable as Central Lake’s strategy of attacking the basket got the Eagles in foul trouble and kept them out of sync in Quinn Barry’s final game on the Central Lake bench after a 30-year career in coaching.
