Bellaire Bar & Restaurant closes after owner's sudden death
BELLAIRE – An era came to a sad and tragic end on July 17 when the Bellaire Bar and Restaurant, long known as a cornerstone of the community, closed after the sudden and untimely death of Mike Kovacs, the establishment's owner for the past 11 years.
According to Bellaire Police Chief Bill Drollinger, the closing came after Drollinger was notified by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission that the bar's liquor license was no longer valid and had been placed in escrow after Kovac's passing on July 11. Kovacs, who reportedly had suffered a number of health issues in recent years, was the sole name listed on the license, Drollinger said.
"When I met with the family, I told them that they could continue to operate as a restaurant, but that they could not sell alcohol," Drollinger said. "The family indicated at that time that they were not interested in retaining the business."
