Bellaire’s Niepoth named first team all-state

REGION — Bellaire senior Lexi Niepoth was one of 12 girls basketball players picked for the Associated Press Class D All State team, announced on Monday.

Niepoth, who helped lead the Eagles to a 21-win season and trip to the state quarterfinals, received honorable mention all-state as a junior. She averaged 15.2 points and 12.4 rebounds per game this year.

Niepoth was one of two players from the Ski Valley Conference to make the first team, with Gaylord St. Mary’s Alex Hunter also making the list. Scout Nelson, the top player from the Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart squad that eliminated Bellaire in the quarterfinals, was a first team honoree, too.

Bree Salenbien, a 6-foot-2 freshman guard who helped Adrian Lenawee Christian win the Class D state championship, was picked as the Player of the Year and her father, Lenawee Christian head coach Jamie Salenbien was chosen as the Coach of the Year.
