Barricaded gunman surrenders to police

KALKASKA – In a written statement, Kalkaska County Sheriff Pat Whiteford reported that on Monday, May 29 at approximately 8:07 p.m. Kalkaska Central Dispatch received a 911 call from a 14-year-old boy reporting that he witnessed his father, Brian Lee Houtman, 46, assault his mother by choking her and throwing her to the ground.

The youth then advised that his father acquired several guns and fired multiple rounds outside the Coldsprings Township residence. He said that his father had been drinking and had locked himself in their pole barn with the guns.

According to Whiteford, Kalkaska Sheriff’s Deputies and Michigan State Troopers responded to the scene and secured the location.
