Jon Koch drills the first taps of the maple syrup season in maple trees on the land he and his wife own in Central Lake Township.

CENTRAL LAKE – When Jon and Janet Koch moved up north in 2002 and built their home on family land in Central Lake Township they were excited at the prospect of enjoying life in the woods on a daily basis.

That included enjoying everything that is "up north," including making their own maple syrup from the maple trees on their property.

"We attended a class the DNR held at Hartwick Pines near Grayling showing people how real maple syrup is made, and knew right away that boiling in our backyard was something we wanted to do," said Janet Koch, a community development specialist for Northern Lakes Economic Alliance.

"It gives us something to do at an otherwise pretty quiet time of the year," added her husband Jon, a project engineer for MTI Market Technologies in Charlevoix. "And it's one of the first signs of spring."

His wife agreed.

"It was pretty neat to learn that anyone can make their own maple syrup – all they need is maple trees," noted Janet.
