REGION – Socks and underwear. It’s not what most people think of when donating clothes for the needy.

But, members of the Kiwanis Club of Kalkaska and other eight clubs of Division 20, which includes clubs from Manistee up to Harbor Springs, learned that’s exactly what many homeless folks need. And, they’re ready to do something about it.

Diana Needham, president of the Kalkaska Club and lieutenant governor for Division 20, said the nine clubs are gearing up for a drive to collect new or used (but in good condition) socks, as well as new underwear, throughout the summer months.

“What triggered this is we talked to some homeless people,” Needham said. “They told us it’s easy to get donated clothes or food. But, it’s hard for them to find good underwear.”

Comments such as those made Needham and other Kiwanis members realize they had probably overlooked such items when organizing previous drives.
