Answering the call: Local Red Cross volunteer returns from western fires

During her one week deployment to northern California to assist in the effort to fight widespread wildfires, Central Lake Red Cross volunteer Darlene Windish was able to enjoy a “short, but sweet” trip to Yosemite National Park.

CENTRAL LAKE – With all of the recent hurricane activity in Texas and Florida, Darlene Windish wasn’t sure where she’d be deployed to assist those in need as a Red Cross volunteer. She just knew that when the call came, as a member of the organization’s Health Services Assessment Team, she’d go – as she has for the past nine years.

But when the call did come, it wasn’t for either Texas or Florida, or even the Caribbean where the Red Cross is now assisting the victims of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

It was for northern California, one of more than six western states suffering from the effects of hundreds of wildfires in the past several months.
