Anonymous donor pledges to match proceeds to Alden Run

ALDEN — An anonymous donor has reached out and offered to match all proceeds that are generated from this year’s Alden Run, money that is earmarked for the Bellaire and Mancelona cross country teams.

The donation came from a person who lives in the area part-time and has run in the Alden Run previously. The donor contacted race director Steve Kershner, and after learning how much the race contributes to the local cross country programs, offered to meet that amount. The donor did not prefer to have his name revealed.

“(I told him) we were able to give $600 to Mancelona and $600 to Bellaire and he goes, ‘That’s great. I’d like to match that this year.’ He said he believes that high school cross country teams never get their due from athletic departments or school systems, and if there is a running season this fall he thinks it’s going to be even worse and he would just like to match whatever we raise for the teams this year up to $1,200,” said Kershner. “It was awesome.”
