Annual Street Fest continues to rock, despite heat wave
KALKASKA – As they say, you can have too much of a good thing.
And, organizers of the seventh annual Kalkaska Street Festival are wondering if hot and humid weather might have cooled off attendance somewhat during the community celebration held Friday through Saturday, Aug. 10-12, at Railroad Square in downtown Kalkaska.
Cash Cook, executive director of Kalkaska’s Downtown Development Authority, said attendance was down from previous year, but added that it was understandable “considering it was so darn hot.”
Still, local residents flocked to the festival for the Free Community Picnic and Concert on Friday night.
“The concert had really wonderful music,” Cook said.
Saturday featured six more musical groups playing under the big tent, as well as vendors, kids activities and bounce houses.
“The music was just outstanding,” Cook added. “The variety was probably the best we’ve had.”
But, with midday temperatures reaching 90 degrees, he said it was understandable that some families probably headed to their favorite lake or river to cool off.
“It’s kind of odd to think, but when it’s overcast and 68 degrees there’s fewer beach options,” Cook said. “When it’s 87, however, people are going to head to the beach or go kayaking.
“We can’t control the weather. We roll with what we’ve got.”
