‘River Master’ celebrates 30 years of overseeing race

Bellaire’s Rubber Ducky Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and local resident Craig Bennett took time earlier this week to recall some of the highlights of his years as the festival’s “River Master.”

BELLAIRE – As Bellaire’s Rubber Ducky Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, one of the individuals who have been a part of the event since the first celebration in 1987 took time earlier this week to recall some of the highlights of his tenure as the festival’s “River Master.”

“I’m the guy that puts together the crew of people that wrangles the rubber ducks from where the race starts at the bridge on M-88 through the river to the finish line,” grinned Bellaire’s Craig Bennett. “There are a lot of other things to do to get ready for the race, too, so my day starts about 7 a.m. and doesn’t end until everything’s cleaned up around 5 p.m. and put away for another year.”
