Beginning at 5:30 p.m., the popular annual Parade of Lights escorting Santa and Mrs. Claus into town from the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church will make its way downtown. Entries for the parade must be received by noon Friday, Nov. 30 and all entries must be lit. BELLAIRE – Just over nine years ago Bellaire residents Jennifer and Jeff Kadlec, Walt and Rhonda Mann, along with Julie and Don Derrer, came up with a good idea to improve Bellaire's annual celebration of Christmas.

The crux of that idea revolved around holding a food competition between local dining establishments – possibly a hot soup cook-off, considering the time of year and weather outside.

The three couples approached the Bellaire Chamber of Commerce, and at Executive Director Patricia Savant's suggestion, formed a committee to make their idea a reality.

That first soup competition, paired with a number of other holiday events – including a parade of floats lit with Christmas lights and the arrival of Santa Claus – was a huge success and has grown annually since then.

Twelve restaurants from throughout the area will participate in this year's event, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 1 from 4:30-7 p.m. in downtown Bellaire.

A total of 700 tickets, first offered for sale on Nov. 3, sold out in just five days, said Savant earlier this week as she and Chamber assistant director Rachel Krino unpacked more than 8,000 specially ordered spoons for the event.
