REGION – To reflect on what it has done, what it is doing and what it plans to do, Communities In Schools (CIS) of Northwest Michigan held a special “All In For Kids Celebration” last Thursday at the Helena Township Community Center in Alden.

Along with a mix of parents, students and staff, attendees were greeted with a visit from National CIS President/CEO Dale Erquiaga and state CIS Director Jeff Brown.

Erquiaga spoke briefly about his experiences of growing up in rural Nevada, and attending a school of six students, to reaching the level of state superintendent after graduating from high school eight years earlier.

“We definitely faced challenges,” Erquiaga said. “But a lot of those challenges – including poverty – are faced by many across this nation today. I currently live in Washington D.C., but I travel frequently throughout the U.S. to visit CIS schools. It doesn’t matter where you go or where you’re from – I see the same issues, abilities and challenges experienced by students across the country.”

Erquiaga thanked Thursday’s attendees and school personnel for their service, and singled out local CIS Executive Director Amy Burk and her staff for their work.
