‘Friends of Veterans’: New organization looks to strengthen community support for area vets

BELLAIRE – The Bellaire area has a new organization dedicated to strengthening community appreciation of area veterans, along with men and women currently serving in the armed forces.

The organization, “Friends of Veterans,” is the brainchild of Bellaire resident, Ray Mills.

“We want to support and appreciate our veterans and active service members,” Mills said. “Currently our military organizations are in great need of awareness and support. Participation in veterans’ organizations has greatly decreased nationwide in recent years and we hope to fill that void.”

An organizational meeting on Aug. 2 drew 15 interested area residents, including Mills and Antrim County Veteran Affairs Director Deborah Peters.

At that meeting, one of the proposed projects discussed by the group included placing American Flags along Cayuga Street (M-88) in the village on Memorial Day, Flag Day and Veterans Day. Cost of the flags would be covered by the sale of $50 sponsorships to people who wanted to honor a veteran or service member with a military style “dog tag,” which would include the donor’s name attached to the flag.
