Bellaire resident Scott Udell (right), who received a heart transplant and a new lease on life from the prestigious Cleveland Clinic in Ohio last January, is pictured with one of his doctors, Eiran Z. Gorodeski, MD, MPH, during a recent check-up.

BELLAIRE – A year ago daily life for the Udell family was very different.

"One year ago, I was driving back and forth between our home in Bellaire, my job at Turtle Creek Casino and Cleveland, Ohio, where my husband Scott was in the cardiac unit of the prestigious Cleveland Clinic on the top priority list for a heart transplant," said Stephanie Harrington Udell.

"We were counting down the minutes as we waited for the right heart to be donated, and praying that he had enough time left to wait."

He did. In a 10-hour surgery on Jan. 22, 2017, Scott Udell became the Cleveland Clinic's 1,806th heart transplant patient.

Udell had checked into the hospital, known worldwide for its work with critically-ill cardiac patients, seven weeks earlier when the heart problems he was first diagnosed with in 2007 became critical.
